Business Problem

Indian Railways run approximately 6420 mail express and passenger trains excluding suburban trains. Loco scheduling for such a large operation is a complex mathematical task and reliable solutions do not exist. At present the loco schedules are made by divisional officers who try to optimize loco utilization within a division. The train runs are divided between sections without any scientific approach. Local optimization at divisional level does not result in global optimization. Nobody knows how many minimum loco are needed to run all the coaching trains such that all the rules are followed and loco maintenance is done properly.

LocoLogic™ : A Decision Support System that helps users to create efficient locomotive connections. It has proprietary algorithms which identify if the locomotive links are optimal or not.

Loco scheduling is assigning homogeneous locomotives located in loco sheds to a set of pre-scheduled coaching trains in order to provide suffiecient power to pull the trains from their origins to their respective destinations.

What We Offer

Loco scheduling is assigning homogeneous locomotives located in loco sheds to a set of pre-scheduled coaching trains in order to provide suffiecient power to pull the trains from their origins to their respective destinations.

How to run all the coaching trains such that minimum number of locomotives are utilized however all the booking rules are followed and slacks are added for major stations or based on user preference.

Locomotive undergoes maintenance at regular intervals, the link should not get affected in case a train runs late. Also locos are interchanged based on its type and subtype. The planners should be able to see the impacts or alternate decisions and calculate the impact on loco link parameters.Locologic™ serves as assistant in the dialogue between planners and loco inspectors.

Benefits of using LocoLogic™ are:

  • Increase in mileage.
  • Set Slacks based on station.
  • Periodic maintenance of locomotive.
  • Zero Based Links can be made or existing links can be modified.
  • Loco Link statistics are automatically calculated.

Locomotive is a very costly resource. Capital cost per loco is Rs 14 Crore. Cost incurred towards maintenance of a loco is Rs 60 Lakhs. Hence saving per loco saving will be around Rs14.6 Crore.

As an illustration, improving locomotive utilization by 2% can save 66 lovomotives on an all-India basis. This should save Rs 924 Cr in capital cost and Rs 178.2 Cr in maintenance, interest and depreciation per year. This is 0.1% of operating ratio. Though final saving will depend on amount of slack accepted but we expect 3-5% saving in locomotives.
